GESTATION 9: A cast of thousands…

May 27, 2010

Amazingly, tonight’s show was the last of my nine month series – can’t quite believe that I’ve reached the end of the project. To celebrate, I invited back a whole bunch of generous-spirited musicians who’ve collaborated with me during the project to perform with me one more time onstage – this time in the larger downstairs room at Whelans. After a long and somewhat chaotic soundcheck, borne by all with exemplary good cheer and patience, we were ready to go. GEMMA HAYES travelled specially to play a gorgeous opening set to a large and rapt crowd. Then I took the stage with – in order of appearance – ANN SCOTT , COLIN MORRIS, EMMALINE DUFFY-FALLON, BIATCH, SEAN MILLAR, PETE PAMF, BILL BLACKMORE, JOE CHESTER, BRIANA CORRIGAN and BOO HEWERDINE. Here’s what we played…

Save Pluto (Ann on bazouki, Colin bass)
Donnybrook (Ann on synth, Biatch and Sean on bvs, Emmaline on drums)
Small Loads (acapella with Biatch)
Everything’s Wrong (with Colin & Emmaline)
I’ve Lost Your Way (with Colin & Emmaline, plus Sean on electric gtr, )
Unreasonable Sex (with Colin & Emmaline, plus Pete on electric gtr & Bill on trumpet)
Arthur Ashe (with Colin, Emmaline, Pete and Bill)
Kingfisher Blue (with Bill)
Bitter Batter Bee (with me on banjo, and Joe on acoustic gtr)
Anaesthetic (with Colin, Emmaline & Joe)
Untidy (with Briana on vox, Boo on acoustic, Colin on organ, Emmaline on drums)
45 (with Colin, Emmaline & Boo)

We encored with

Arclight (with Colin & Emmaline)
World Exploding Touch (with Colin & Emmaline)
Infrastructure (with Colin, Emmaline, Pete and Joe)

A fabulous night was had be me, and I think by most others too, judging by the response afterwards – and everyone went home clutching their individually-numbered copy of “Nine Lives” by Alien Envoy, the name I’ve decided to adopt for my new musical endeavours.

I’m really proud of this little record, and of the unique way that it’s been brought into being – and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those who’ve supported me through the process, especially those who’ve taken the trouble to read and respond to this blogsite. To all of you who’ve offered opinions, artwork and encouragement – a very sincere thank you. You’ve made this record too.

I’ll post again soon with further news, but in the meantime I think I need a lie-down…

GESTATION 9 – the grand finale…

May 18, 2010

On Wednesday May 26th, I’ll be playing the ninth and last show in my GESTATION project in the main downstairs room in Whelans – and I’ve something very special planned for this momentous and celebratory occasion. Well three very special things, in fact…

1. I’ve asked back many of my guest collaborators from throughout the project to join me onstage to reprise our finest moments together. Welcome back (deep breath) BOO HEWERDINE, BRIANA CORRIGAN, ANN SCOTT, JOE CHESTER, SEAN MILLAR, PETE PAMF, BILL BLACKMORE, COLIN MORRIS and EMMALINE DUFF-FALLON (aka MISS METRONOME).

2. The fabulous GEMMA HAYES will be performing a special guest slot beforehand – if you’ve never heard or seen her live, you’re in for a treat.

3. Everybody who pays into the show will receive a FREE LIVE CD, limited edition and individually numbered, featuring nine tracks gleaned from the best performances recorded over the nine months.

Plus… anybody holding a loyalty card from previous months will get in FREE (and get their CD too).

It’s going to be a really great night, so if you’re at all within striking distance of Dublin 8, do come down.

GESTATION 8 – you asked for it

May 18, 2010

For my penultimate show, I promised to leave my new songs to one side and play a complete set of songs from my back catalogue as requested by my fan. Tactical voting threw up some surprise results – no “Arclight” in the top 17! – but also lots of treat. Gerry Murtagh won the hotly-contested prize for the best cover suggestion with Prefab Sprout’s “We Let The Stars Go”. After a a lovely scene-setter from Steafan Hanvey, I sang the following (“Arclight” was given a wild card entry at the end of the night)…

Walking Back To My Heart
Fear And Favour
Show Of Myself
Johnny Sunrise
Grey And Blue
Faint Heart
New Star
Mystery Of Love
Loneliest Ghost In Pere Lachaise
You’re Gonna Fall
Providence
Twist
World Exploding Touch
We Let The Stars Go (for Gerry Murtagh)
Horse Water Wind
Drunkard Logic
Arclight
Republic

Thanks so much for suggesting such an interesting selection and for coming out to listen.
